Eugene and Esther

We have been working with Sheryl and her team for the past two years teaching our four kids to swim, aged 10, 7, 6, and 3.

She and her family have been wonderful to work with. For our youngest, it was important that she receive individualized attention so that we would feel safe if she were in the water. Within several lessons, she learned that the pool was safe, fun, and a great place to learn.

For our older kids, they have learned how to refine their swim strokes, learn the rules of the pool, but most of all have a great time. I think one thing that sets Sheryl’s philosophy apart is the time that she and her family spend with our kids. Having a familiar face in the pool when the kids first start out has been great for them and us, and the trust we have in them has been phenomenal.

I would highly recommend ISR and Sheryl Rothe to anyone considering swim lessons. We have a pool and we needed to feel confident that our son was safe.

One of the keys to success for ISR is consistency. You go every day for 10 minutes. Ten minutes is enough to challenge your kids but not overwhelm them.

During lessons, I watched Sheryl transform our son into a swimmer. She figured out where Lennon was and then built a bridge to other skills. He wasn’t an easy kid to teach, but she kept trying different strategies and eventually broke through. She earned Lennon’s and my trust.

Now he asks to swim every day and people are amazed at what he can do at such a young age. It’s fun to show his skills off and we’re incredibly proud of him. We couldn’t have achieved this without Sheryl.

A good friend gave us Sheryl’s contact information for ISR lessons. She came with high recommendations. I didn’t know much about ISR but knew my son needed it. He loved the water but had a fear of getting all the way in the water. He refused to wear a life jacket. So, we knew we needed to do something quickly since we have a pool.

We went to our first lesson. Liam cried the whole time. Which I noticed was normal but I was surprised by his reaction. Sheryl handled it with such grace and reassured me he was just fine and it was normal. For the next couple of weeks I watched from a distance. He slowly came to love the water so much. He couldn’t wait to get to swim class to see Ms. Sheryl. Ms. Sheryl  was someone we talked about daily in our household. He asked to go to swim lessons. He refused to get out of the water.

Liam took a little more time with learning the ISR skills. He is a very type A personality.  Sheryl was so patient with him. He tried to negotiate with her a lot. He always needed to know an exact number for what swim, or move he was going to be doing.  Sheryl made sure that he was completely comfortable in the water and met all the proper requirements. We greatly appreciated that so much!

Liam began floating and swimming on his own. Liam was so excited. Sheryl, was just as happy for him. It was truly such a sweet moment between them. Sheryl truly taught our son a lifelong skill that we will continue to refresh up on yearly with ISR. ISR is life changing. We have confidence in our son’s ability in the water but none of that couldn’t have been done without Sheryl. Her patience, and kindness never went unnoticed. When, you see someone 5 days a week they truly become such a big part of your life. We are happy to have Sheryl a part of ours.

I can’t praise enough about the ISR program and our amazing instructor Sheryl Rothe. My son started with Sheryl when he was 10 months old. Sheryl built trust and a comforting relationship with our Son AJ right from his first day. I admire Sheryl for her patience, experience and skill set with children, especially in the water. Her one to one un-divided attention is what I love best.

Sheryl also showed on several instances her passion and dedication to teaching, and making every minute count for  each child learning the skill of the ISR program, as well as hitting those achievements of floating like a sea otter. We love Sheryl, and can’t wait to return each season.

I am so grateful for Sheryl. When she was working on my son’s summer refresher lessons, she continued working with him longer than the typical refresher  length of the lessons are supposed to be. She continued working with him until his float, which was very challenging for him, was extremely solid. She uses lesson time efficiently and helps your child reach solid results. My child’s swimming skills blossomed once she became his teacher, and I am very satisfied.

A Grateful Mom

Drowning is a real and scary thing. Through ISR, our four year old has learned lifelong water safety and survival skills. Starting at around 15 months, she has gained confidence in the water year after year. We are now entering our fourth season with Sheryl, a kind, reassuring and supportive instructor. Our daughter loves swimming and being in the water. Although the commitment is tough, both financially and time wise, this is one of the best investments we have made for our child. We look forward to her younger brother starting the program this season.

We have had my five year old son do ISR lessons with Sheryl since he was six months old. I am forever grateful for Sheryl’s skills and ability in ISR.  My son loves swimming and the pool, but also has a healthy respect for the water.  Throughout our five years with Sheryl, I have been comforted by the fact that should the unthinkable occur, my son will have the critical survival skills needed-solely due to Sheryl and ISR. As soon as my daughter turns six months old, I plan on her beginning lessons with Sheryl in order to continue keeping my children safe around pools.

Signing up for ISR lessons with Sheryl was the best decision we could have made for our son. He started just after his second birthday and thrived. He was scared at first, but Sheryl’s calm teaching style and patience calmed all of his fears. After the first week, he was excited to go to lessons and talked about swimming all the time. After the first month, he was jumping off the edge of the pool and swimming. Watching the transformation was incredible. Sheryl worked with him every day on water safety, while making it fun and enjoyable. We are excited to keep up with the maintenance lessons to ensure our son can grow in his swimming skills while also learning from Sheryl how to keep himself safe. We are truly thankful for Sheryl and her lessons.

My name is Marilyn and with a former Coast Guard husband, I know to plan for a lifetime of water activities.  When I was researching swim classes, I wanted more than just playtime in water and with ISR I feel that my children are being taught a skill set to help them become strong swimmers in the future. Sheryl has been an amazing instructor with a patient, individualized approach to each child.  For example, my son is a very enthusiastic jump-first-deal-with-the-repercussions-later toddler while my infant daughter needs more coaxing and reassuring pep talks.  It is incredible to see their progression and also how they retain skills even if there is a break in lessons.  While nothing takes the place of diligent adult supervision, it gives me a sense of relief knowing they can come to a calm back float if they fall into water.  I would definitely recommend ISR classes with Sheryl and would consider them a worthwhile investment in your childrens’ future and your peace of mind!

ISR in particular is such an  important program, and why I fully believe that it adds for families.  It truly gives children the ability to survive in the water.  My personal story could have been very different had it not been for ISR, our daughter had just finished her first summer of instruction, and our son his third summer of instruction.  I was in the pool at home with both of them and was practicing with our son while our daughter sat on the top step, not even two feet away from me.  She was about 10 months old at the time and loved to sit and splash around.  I was slightly in front of her and frequently looked over my shoulder to check on her while launching our son to the wall and having him swim back to me.  After one launch he turned to swim back and said “Look Mommy, sister is floating!” I turned and sure enough, she was floating on her back, happy as can be. I honestly cant say whether I had last checked on her 30 seconds before or 2 minutes before, and that is a very scary thing.  Less than two feet away, and I never heard her go into the water-no splash, no bubbling, nothing.  I just know that its likely she went face first because she had been sitting with her back to the wall.  She used what she learned in ISR to flip over to her back and floated there until I was able to “rescue” her.  Had she not had those lessons, the outcome may have been dramatically different.  Less than two feet away, and I have no idea how long she was in the water before I noticed .  I thought I was paying close attention to both of my children, but that just goes to show how easy it is to get distracted, and that can mean the difference between life and death.  I am certain that, in our case, it was and that our daughter is still here today because of her life saving skills she obtained through ISR

Sheryl was patient and thorough with teaching my 1.5 year old infant swim.  She was able to gain the trust of the baby and instruct her on the skills from infant swim that will save her life.  I was out of town for a week and my husband continued the lessons.  Upon my return, I was amazed at the progress that my child made and I feel confident that she will be able to survive an accidental fall into a pool.  This is due to the work from Sheryl.

A very lucky parent

To whom it may concern,

My son is a student of Sheryl Rothe’s in her ISR class. She is a wonderful teacher who was able to calm a very young baby in the pool for the first time. He feels safe with her and is able to learn how to save himself should he ever fall in any pool. He loves seeing her and does not dread going to lessons, which is something I feared before we started lessons. I just wish I had had the benefits of such lessons at his age!

We have been with Sheryl for one season.  We called her in a panic because we were going on vacation in 6 weeks with our two year old to the beach and staying at a resort without pool fences.  She assured me my daughter would be floating in the pool and be able to enjoy safe water play in no time.  Sheryl is prompt, accommodating and dedicated to her swim kids.  Even making special arrangements so my daughter could get in as much water time as possible before our vacation.  We had a wonderful time on our trip and slept well at night knowing our daughter had respect for the water, confidence and basic skills.  We are fairly new to town and I mention that we have our child in ISR and people respond with “Is it with Sheryl?”.  We are looking forward to seeing her next season.

We enrolled Carmela in ISR with Sheryl at one year old because she was completely fearless around water. She hated to float and only wanted to swim on her belly, but Sheryl was so patient with her and after a couple of weeks she was floating on her back alone. A few more weeks went by and she was able to roll over and float with a full set up clothes on. After a couple of months of lessons, Carmela fell into a pool, fully clothed, and saved her own life by rolling onto her back (she was supervised and rescued quickly). Every parent should take their child to Sheryl. She has so much information and tricks to help kids feel more comfortable in the water in a SAFE way. My Daughter LOVES to see her every week and asks to go see “Miss Sheryl” often. Thanks!!

I am writing this letter in support of ISR lessons offered by Sheryl Rothe at the Tucson Dive Shop.   My children began working with Sheryl when they were six months old, and they are now strong swimmers who love the water.  ISR has given our family the gift of water safety along with teaching our children how to be safe in and around the water it has taught them life long skills they can take with them.  It gave them confidence to apply to every aspect of their lives.  Our oldest is now a swimmer on the SAAA swim team and USA swim team at the JCC.
